Meniscectomy

The menisci have several functions in the knee joint. They distribute load over the tibia and absorb the shock within the joint. They contribute to stability and proprioception and aid the lubrication and nutrition of the articular cartilage. Therefore, complete or partial loss of a meniscus can have damaging effects on a knee, leading to serious long-term problems. This chapter summarizes the body of evidence in the literature in terms of meniscus anatomy, function, tears, and surgical technique and reviews the consequences of meniscectomy.
