INTRAVITRIAL INJECTION

What is an Intravitreal Injection?
An intravitreal injection is a specialized medical procedure where medication is delivered directly into the vitreous, the jelly-like substance located inside the eye. This treatment is primarily performed to place essential medicines near the retina to address various ocular conditions. These drugs are currently recognized as the first-line treatment for all stages of wet macular degeneration.
The primary function of these medications is to inhibit the growth of abnormal new blood vessels. They achieve this by blocking the effects of specific growth signals the body sends to generate these vessels, thereby protecting the patient's vision.
The Intravitreal Injection Procedure
Once the patient's pupil is fully dilated, the entire procedure typically takes approximately 15 minutes. The process is conducted with precision following these clinical steps:
- Preparation: The patient is placed in a comfortable position, and anaesthetic (numbing) drops are applied to the eye to ensure comfort.
- Sterilization: The eye and eyelids are thoroughly cleaned using an iodine antiseptic solution to prevent infection.
- Administration: An instrument is used to hold the eye open, and the medicine is injected into the vitreous.
During the administration, patients may feel a slight pressure on the eye; however, the procedure is designed so that you should not experience pain.
Post-Procedure Recovery and Expectations
Immediately following the injection, the doctor will perform a clinical check of the eye. Before leaving the clinic, an antibiotic ointment will be applied to the treated area. It is important for patients to understand the normal recovery sensations:
- Gritty Sensation: You may experience a gritty feeling in the eye shortly after the procedure.
- Subconjunctival Hemorrhage: There may be visible bleeding over the white of the eye. This is not a cause for concern and will resolve naturally over time.
- Floaters: You might notice floaters in your vision; these typically become smaller and disappear within a couple of weeks.
Treatment Frequency and Vision Recovery
To maintain the beneficial effects of the medicine, patients may undergo repeat injections every few weeks. This consistent approach is vital for managing the underlying condition effectively.
In many instances, patients may experience a partial recovery of vision. This occurs as the abnormal blood vessels shrink and the fluid under the retina is absorbed, which allows the retinal cells to regain some of their natural function.
