Comparısıon of preoperatıve upper abdomınal ct scannıng wıth operatıve fındıngs ın gastrıc malıgnancıes

ABSTRACT: In order to determine the accuracy of CT scanning, CT scan results were compared with operative findings in 34 patients with gastric malignancies which were diagnosed endoscopially between l994 - 1998. The CT seans were evaluated in respect to gastric wall thickening, adjacent spread, nodal metastases and hepatic metastases. The results were evaluated statistically for diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. For gastric wall thickening, diagnostic accuracy was assessed as 85% while sensitivity was 96% and specificity was 43% respectiveily. The above parameters were 59%, 38% and 71 %for adjacent spread and 50%, 30% and 94% for nodal metastasis respectively. While 94% diagnostic accuracy, 88% sensitivity and 96% specificity were assessed for hepatic metastases. it has been found that predicting the resectability of gastric tumors depending on CT results can be performed sensitively, but determining the sensitivity of CT results for curability of the same tumors is less successful due to the low accuracy of diagnosis of lymph node metastasis.
